Travel Guide – Maldives

1. Location 

Republic of Maldives (aka Maldives Islands), located in the Indian Ocean about 700 KM south west of Sri Lanka and 400 KM south west of India.

2. History

Maldives was dominated by colonial powers; Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain.  British anglicized the local name of Islands as Maldives Islands. In 1965, it gain independence from British rule and became republic country after coming under Sultanate rule. Maldives is an Islamic country and open practice of any other religion is prohibited.

3. Culture

The island has a long history of Sufic orders, as can be seen in the history of the country such as the building of tombs.

4. Language

The official and common language is Dhivehi, an Indo-European language. English is used widely in commerce and increasingly in government schools.  

5. Climate

Ø  Humid, ranges between 24 to 33 °C,

Ø  Constant cool sea breezes keep the air moving and the heat mitigated.

Ø  Climate is characterized by the dry season and monsoon season which reaches in the beginning of June ends until August.

6. Places to visit

Consist of twenty six (26) atolls.  Among the famous are;
a) Addu Atoll: It is heart shaped and considered as one of the best places for independent travelers. The best part is that travelers can cycle to three inhabited islands via a causeway- only resort where such freedom is allowed.

b) Male: Male or (Mar-ley) is tiny island, small enough to walk around in an hour. It is densely crowded and surrounded by turquoise water all around. Most visitors arrived at Malé International Airport, on Hulhulé Island

b) Southern Atolls: Due to the already crowded islands, southern atolls are now under focus. Major developments are also under way.
